New Faces of 2025 LAS Council (Part 1)

LAS has welcomed some new faces to its 2025 Council! We asked our new Council members to take a quiz to discover which Singaporean drink matches their personality. So, grab your favourite cuppa and let us meet the people who will be stirring things up in Singapore’s library scene!

Ms Shameem Nilofar Maideen

LAS President

Institution: Singapore Management University, University Librarian

Singaporean drink personality: Bandung

What is accurate about you from the results?
Two statements resonated with me – “Empathetic & Authentic” and “I want to create something meaningful.”

How would you relate the Bandung traits to your term as a LAS Council member?
Libraries have always been about uplifting the collective. I believe in the value of librarians, the value they bring to society at large. I have the privilege of working with a group of passionate professionals who believe in the advocacy power of an association, to be a platform that creates meaningful impact. We have a valuable and key role to play in enabling a knowledge infrastructure that powers our “Smart Nation” strategy. These values or “traits” define and drive everything I do.

Mr Ian Yap

Institution: National Library Board, Director (Resource Discovery & Management)

Singaporean drink personality: Milo Dinosaur

What is accurate about you from the results?
Playful, energetic, highly enthusiastic and can be scattered.

How would you relate the Milo Dinosaur traits to your term as a LAS Council member?
I hope to inject fun in the things we embark on.

Ms Ng Hui Ling

LAS Asst. Hon. Sec/Membership Chair

Institution: National Library Board, Deputy Director/Principal Librarian

Singaporean drink personality: Bandung

What is accurate about you from the results?
I guess the part about “feels more than says”? It depends though; if I know you well, I will probably say way too much.

How would you relate the Bandung traits to your term as a LAS Council member?
Perhaps it is the idealistic soul (that has not completely died, I guess?) that makes me continue my term. Truth be told, it gets a tad tiring thinking/trying to revive interest in the association or even the profession itself. I am definitely not the person who has the grand vision to see this through, but I do hope to see it goes back to being as vibrant as I was told by others before me 😉

Ms Lee Meiyu

Chair, LAS Publications Committee

Institution: National Library Singapore, Assistant Director (Statutory Function)

Singaporean drink personality: Bandung

What is accurate about you from the results?
“I want to create something meaningful”

How would you relate Bandung traits to your term as a LAS Council member?
Having been in the library industry for more than two decades, it makes me wonder what else I can contribute to the industry. When invited to serve as Chair of the Publications Committee, I accepted the opportunity to raise public awareness about something I have loved since childhood—libraries. Many of us have benefited from library services throughout our lives, however, the industry itself and the vital work happening behind the scenes often remain unseen. Through my role, I hope to inspire greater public interest in library professions and foster stronger collaboration among professionals to advance the industry’s future.

Ms Sandie Loo Hong Ling

Chair, LAS IT Committee

Institution: National Institute of Education, Senior Librarian

Singaporean drink personality: Avocado Shake

What is accurate about you from the results?
Creative and adaptable.

How would you relate the Avocado Shake traits to your term as a LAS Council member?
Like an avocado shake, smooth, refreshing, and a little unexpected. I have blended creativity and adaptability to serve up fresh technological ideas and keep things cool (and flexible!) in the IT Committee.

That’s a wrap for the first round of our thirst-quenching introductions. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will be serving up more delightful drink personalities from our 2025 Council. You will not want to miss what is brewing next!
