Memories and Monuments Exhibition at NLB
‘Monuments and Memories’ exhibition organised by The Preservation of Monuments Board (PMB) is being held from 4 June to 5 July 2010 at Promenade Level 9, National Library Building. The month-long photography exhibition will feature 29 of Singapore’s National Monuments artistically captured by photographers whose previous works were showcased in the Resonance Songs of our Forefathers book. The exhibition aims to raise public awareness of Singapore’s heritage through architecturally significant buildings such as the earliest form of community centres, houses of worship and refuge by providing a glimpse into Singapore’s past with special human-interest stories and lesser-known trivias.
In conjunction with this exhibition, PMB launched its first Education Kit entitled National Monuments of Singapore by Guest of Honour, Ms Ho Peng, Director-General of Education, Ministry of Education on 11 June 2010 National Library Building. Each education kit contains write-ups of Singapore’s 61 monuments, a trail map with proposed activities, worksheets and Singapore’s National Monuments resource guide. The education kit incorporates experiential, place-based and interactive learning suggestions for teachers to include in their lesson planning for Singapore’s history, social studies and national education.
Other activities during the exhibition include a 1-day workshop held on 17 June 2010 on the usage of the education kit and application to class curriculum, suggested activities along with a demonstration of the resources and services available at the National Library Singapore. There will also be 4 walking trails designed by Monument Ambassadors from River Valley High School on 6,13, 27 June and 4 July.
