
Library Carpentry two-day workshop
On 11-12 June 2019, LAS and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Library are jointly hosting a Library Carpentry 2-day workshop.
The Carpentries are a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives. They teach skills that are immediately useful for researchers, using lessons and datasets that allow researchers to apply what they’ve learned to their work quickly.
This is the first time a Library Carpentry workshop is held in Singapore. We are excited about using the Library Carpentry curriculum to help us become more efficient in our work. The curriculum will include:
The target audience is learners who have little to no prior computational experience, and the instructors put a priority on creating a friendly environment to empower researchers and enable data-driven discovery. Even those with some experience will benefit, as the goal is to teach not only how to do analyses, but how to manage the process to make it as automated and reproducible as possible.
After attending this workshop, you will be able to:
- define terms, phrases, and concepts in software development and data science
- identify and use best practices in data structures
- understand what the OpenRefine software does and how to use the OpenRefine software to work with data files
- work with library data in spreadsheets and get more done in less time, and with less pain

Space is limited, and it will likely fill quickly.
There will be a fee of $280 for LAS members, and $400 for non-members. Your registration costs go towards your instructors’ travel costs. No refund will be entertained.
Lunch will not be provided; there will be a recommended list of dining options near the workshop venue at your own expense. Morning and afternoon coffee/tea breaks will be provided.
