Eye on Asia: Your first-stop resource centre for connecting with Asia

In a time of rapid change and disruption, libraries can play a key role in preparing our users for the future by providing curated information and resources. In this post, the National Library shares one of its latest initiatives, Eye on Asia, targeted at Singaporeans who wish find out more about developments in ASEAN countries, China and India, as well as explore the opportunities in the region.

Eye on Asia

The National Library, Singapore’s Eye on Asia resource centre aims to be a first-stop centre providing curated information to promote awareness of regional developments in emerging Asian economies such as the ASEAN countries, China and India. Through this, Eye on Asia hopes to support and provide resources for everyone, including young Singaporeans, who wish to find out more about the region and explore opportunities abroad as Singapore gears itself for the future economy.

Launched on 10 February 2018 at the National Library by then Senior Minister of State for Communications & Information and Health, Mr Chee Hong Tat, the Eye on Asia resource centre takes the form of a dedicated online portal (www.eyeonasia.sg), as well as a physical space on Level 7 of the National Library that showcases the National Library’s collections related to the featured countries. Monthly programmes are also organised with our partners to gain insights from entrepreneurs and people who have lived and worked abroad.

The Eye on Asia portal offers content under the following three categories:

  • KNOW: Facts and information about ASEAN countries, China and India including a short profile of each country, as well as curated resources covering living and working overseas
  • SHARE: First-hand accounts of those living and working in ASEAN countries, China and India through study mission reports from students and experiences from business people who have ventured overseas
  • GO: A list of overseas internship programmes, awards and training courses for both students and young professionals offered by the various educational and business institutions, as well as examples of contacts of Singapore communities which may be useful for those who are keen to venture to these featured countries.

On 3 April 2018, President Director of PT Walletku Indompet Indonesia, Mr Farid MN from Singapore shared key points to get started when venturing overseas.

The three categories target to inspire users to take action and experience working life overseas – to move from “Know” (about ASEAN countries, China and India) to “Go” (into ASEAN countries, China and India). Through the Eye on Asia’s place, portal and programmes, the National Library hopes to pique the interest of Singaporeans, particularly the young to research deeper and take steps to venture for a stint in these emerging Asian economies.

Eye on Asia is a collaborative effort by the National Library with partners such as Enterprise Singapore, Business China Singapore, International Trading Institute@SMU, Nanyang Business School and Temasek Polytechnic.
